Equipped with improved technology and new instruments, the third generation of METEOSAT series will take over operation from the current second-generation from 2016.
This means that at least until 2030, meteorological data are available. The development of the series starts in 2009. In November, the member states of the European Space Agency ESA, will approve the development and construction of satellite prototypes with a budget of 870 million euros.
