Lufthansa Cargo has profitable 2008Lufthansa Cargo ends 2008 with operating profit
Frachtflugline schafft noch 164 Mio. Euro Gewinn<br /> Despite the beginning of a sever drop in airfreigt business, Lufthansa Cargo returned the second best-ever results in company history in the 2008 business year. Operating profit, rose by 20.9 per cent to 164 million Euros (2007: 136m Euros). Revenues rose by 6.3 per cent to 2.9 billion Euros (2007: 2.74bn Euros).
Lufthansa Cargo Chairman Carsten Spohr: “This success shows that Lufthansa Cargo mastered the challenges of the past year professionally – be they the growing excess capacities in the market or strongly fluctuating fuel prices.” “All in all, Lufthansa Cargo pulled through in an adverse environment thanks to systematic sales, capacity and cost management,“ observed Lufthansa Cargo Board Member Finance and Human Resources, Dr. Roland Busch.
During the past year, freight and mail tonnage fell by six per cent to 1.7 million tonnes. Available tonne-kilometres increased by 2.8 per cent to 12,584 million freight-tonne kilometres, but sales fell by two per cent to 8.283 million freight-tonne kilometres transported so that the cargo load factor in the 2008 business year was down to 65.8 per cent (2007: 69.1 per cent).
Lufthansa Cargo has reaffirmed plans to invest a three-digit million figure in a new logistics center in CargoCity North at Frankfurt Airport, given the required economic prerequisites. The existing center, which began operating in 1982, is now in need of modernisation. In the debate on a night-flight ruling pursuant to airport expansion, Lufthansa Cargo is still strongly in favour of a practicable solution, allowing freighter flights, which are required by the market, to be operated between 11 pm and 5 am.
The global economic crisis has severely affected the global air cargo industry since the final quarter of 2008. On 1 January 2009, Lufthansa Cargo introduced a programme to safeguard its results. The programme entails, among others cuts in freighter capacities as well as staff and materials costs. At the same time, the company will continue to actively exploit market opportunities – for example, by operating services with MD-11 freighters between Milan and the USA.
