2008-03-30 - No Transrapid for MUCNo Transrapid for Munich Airport
Kostenexplosion stoppt Transrapid-Bau<br /> Dr. Michael Kerkloh, CEO of the Munich Airport operating company, FMG, expressed deep regret at the decision by the German government in Berlin not to build a Transrapid maglev rail link between Munich Airport and downtown Munich.
"The Transrapid," says Kerkloh, "would have provided Munich and the surrounding region with a unique opportunity to implement a long-term solution to an increasingly acute problem and turn a serious infrastructure shortcoming into a competitive advantage and a valuable industrial policy tool." "With 57 million passengers forecast to be using Munich Airport in 2020," says Kerkloh, "Munich now needs to find a viable alternative to the Transrapid to ensure that Munich Airport gains an express rail link to Munich's central railway station and the long-distance rail network. Regardless of what solution is ultimately chosen," adds the airport CEO,"it is imperative for it to be planned, financed, built and put into operation as quickly as possible."
